Once in a while, I get a message from someone that starts with the word Between. For example: Between, I won’t be able to attend tomorrow’s meeting.
This happens often and from many people. I never could understand what the word Between was doing right in the beginning of the sentence as it added no additional context or meaning. Then one day, I heard someone actually use it when speaking to me.
I asked. She explained. I finally understood what she (and most likely others too) meant.
BTW. That’s what she wanted to say. Having seen BTW used in written communication, she just assumed it means Between.
As I explained to her, BTW doesn’t mean Between. It is a short form for By the way.
This is one of those cases where a phrase or a word is used only in written communication for convenience and never actually spoken out loud in its short form. It’s difficult to judge the meaning unless we actively look for it.
This might come across as somewhat Pedantic, but I thought it was interesting enough to share. IDK, YMMV.
If you were puzzled like me about the usage of BTW by others, maybe this offers some explanation. If you are one of those who mean BTW but say Between, maybe this will offer some clarification
