How I approach New Year Resolutions

Like everyone, I wish to become a better person every New Year. Like everyone, I wish to get rid of all my vices every New Year. Like everyone, I wish to achieve bigger personal, professional, financial and health goals every New Year.

Unlike everyone, I don’t wait till January 1st. I make and start putting my resolutions into action at the latest by December 17th. That’s today. Usually, it’s sooner.

You see, I have a belief about myself. I believe I can’t do something until I have already done it for two weeks. Trust me, it’s not as idiotic as it sounds. It’s not a superstition either. It’s a belief based on empirical evidence about myself.

For me, and for many people who juggle many things at once, adding anything new or getting rid of anything old is stressful.

When I decided to stop smoking on Jan 1st, 2016, I had already stopped on September 26th, 2015.

When I decided to start writing a daily email from Jan 1st, 2021, I have already started on October 1st, 2020.

So it was with starting my first business. Or when I started running. And many many similar resolutions. I make a resolution for Jan 1st, but I start it much sooner.

It’s worked well for me all these days. Like they say, if it’s crazy and it works, then it’s not crazy.

What’s your new year’s resolution, and strategy to achieve it?
